The Village Club, Townend was opened on 11th October 1902 and funded by Lloyd’s underwriter Henry Poland (pictured opposite). Its aim was to provide ‘healthy amusement for men who did not wish to go to public houses’. Equipped with a gym, reading, recreation and billiard rooms, it was the headquarters of the village cricket club, Caterham Park FC, and Caterham Cycling Club.
